Local MP Joins celebration of BCOT supported internships

Basingstoke MP Maria Miller was delighted to join students and staff at BCOT, together with employers, to mark the first year of BCOT’s Supported Internships. The Supported Internship is a programme designed to help young people with special educational needs get into the workplace.

Maria said: “It was good to see how motivated and engaged the children were both in the school and extra-curricular activities. The questions from the council were far ranging and I am constantly encouraged to see how keen such young pupils in Basingstoke are to contribute to both their  school and the wider community.”

Maria met Mrs Larissa James, Head Teacher for a catch up on the latest developments at the school, including the recent expansion of the school to accommodate the increasing number of infant school children from new local housing development.

Maria said: “I was delighted to visit Marnel Primary School, and particularly pleased to be invited to help with the opening of the new Library. The children showed a real excitement about reading, which is so important for their future academic success.  I was hugely impressed by the high educational standards set for all children, and by the inspirational leadership shown by the Head Teacher.”

Maria said: “I congratulate First Group/MTR on their successful bid for the south western franchise. They have promised to deliver an increase in capacity during the morning and evening peaks and faster journey times, with real time travel information, as well as additional refurbished trains, with faster and more reliable on-board wifi."

Maria visited RDT, a Basingstoke Technology Business and met with CEO and founder, Graham Murphy and Major General Martin Bricknell to celebrate the company’s contract with the Ministry of Defence bringing more jobs to Basingstoke.
