MARIA MILLER, MP PRESENTS PARLIAMENTARY AWARD TO SPOTLIGHT

Maria welcomed Spotlight to Westminster to present founder Michaela Riley with a Parliamentary Award. Maria nominated the charity for the “Inspire the House” Awards run by Kids Count and the Basingstoke Charity won “Best Community Group.” 

MARIA MILLER, MP TO SUPPORT NEW HOUSING BILL IN PARLIAMENT THIS WEEK

Maria will be supporting the new Housing Bill this week, which will support the Conservative Party’s important General Election Manifesto pledge to help more people have a home of their own. More people will have the 'Right to Buy' their Housing Association homes, more affordable Starter Homes will be built and there will be more of the 'Help to Buy’ scheme, which has already helped thousands of families to have a home of their own.

Maria Miller MP wins Pink News Member of the Year Award

Maria was delighted to be awarded ‘Member of the Year’ jointly with Ruth Davidson at the annual Pink News awards ceremony last Wednesday. Maria was nominated on the grounds of her new role as Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee. Under her leadership, the committee’s first inquiry has been into the future of trans legislation and policy.

MARIA MILLER, MP WELCOMES NEW EMPLOYMENT FIGURES

Maria said: “These figures for September are great news for people who want to work hard and get on in Basingstoke – we have one of the lowest levels of unemployment in the country, and I am glad that this means more people have the security of employment and a regular pay packet, so they can provide for themselves and their families.”

MARIA MILLER, MP URGES RESIDENTS TO HAVE THEIR SAY

Maria Miller has highlighted Thames Water’s plans to expand the sewage works at Chineham and to bring in waste from areas as far afield as Guildford for further treatment, adding at least 14 additional lorry movements a day to the already chronic traffic congestion on the A33 and wider road network. Thames Water has applied to Hampshire County Council for planning permission to build an “Enhanced Sludge Digestion Scheme” on its current sewage treatment site on the A33 at Chineham. The proposal would see sewage sludge brought in by road from Guildford, Fleet, Farnham and Newbury.

MARIA MILLER, MP VISITS BASINGSTOKE GAS SAFE HQ

Maria called in at the Gas Safe Register’s national headquarters, which is based at Chineham Park in Basingstoke, to mark Gas Safety Week 2015, which is running from 14 to 20 September.  She was welcomed by Jonathan Samuel, Chief Executive of the Gas Safe Register and Scott Darroch, Head of Communications, who briefed her on their work on gas safety issues.

LOCAL MP CONGRATULATES BASINGSTOKE STUDENTS ON GCSE RESULTS

Maria Miller has praised local students for the hard work that has gone into their GCSE results, which were released this week.  She said: “All our local students are to be congratulated for the effort they have put in to achieving their GCSE results, both those who have done exceptionally well, and those who have have made real progress to produce a grade that might earlier have seemed  beyond them.”

Maria Miller MP met with staff from the Basingstoke Alzheimer’s society, carers and people suffering from dementia to discuss means of increasing awareness among local people of the disease, its symptoms and the services available.
