During Trustees’ Week, which runs from 4 to 10 November, Basingstoke MP Maria Miller is highlighting the dedicated work of the trustees of local charities, and promoting the benefits of becoming a charity trustee.
There are a great number of charities and voluntary organisations in Basingstoke, covering a very wide range of activities and services. They all depend on the trustees who oversee their work, most of whom are volunteers. Trustees’ Week raises awareness of the work they do and also highlights the benefits of being a trustee, for example through gaining valuable experience and skills.
Maria said: “We are very lucky in Basingstoke to have such a strong and vibrant charity and voluntary sector. Our local charities do some fantastic work, and during Trustees’ Week, I particularly want to pay tribute to their trustees, who play an essential role.”
She added: “I would also encourage people to think about whether they could help a local charity by becoming a trustee. It’s a great way to learn new skills and gain experience, and could lead to new opportunities and employment. Estimates suggest that almost half of charities have at least one vacancy on their board, so there’s an organisation for you, whatever your age or interests.”
