Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke, has been appointed as the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in the Government’s Ministerial reshuffle.
In her new role, Maria will be a member of the Cabinet and lead the Department for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, which is responsible for a very wide range of issues, including press and broadcasting, telecommunications and the arts. In addition to these responsibilities, she will also take on the Women and Equalities portfolio, which is currently held by a Home Office Minister.
Maria said: “I am delighted to have been appointed as the Culture Secretary by the Prime Minister and am very much looking forward to tackling the many challenges that the role will bring.”
Maria added: “I will of course continue to work hard to represent the people of Basingstoke in Parliament, which has always been and continues to be my priority.”
Commenting on the Ministerial position which she has held since May 2010, Maria added: “It has been an honour to serve as Minister for Disabled People in the Department for Work and Pensions, helping to ensure that some of the most vulnerable people in our society receive the help that they need to live more independent lives.”
