Maria Miller MP  hosted a virtual Basingstoke International Women’s day event .The Parliamentary event was aimed at encouraging more women to come forward to represent their community. The Basingstoke MP ran the the event as part of her “Inspiring Women Series.”

Attendees heard from School Governors, Parish Councillors, Borough Councillors and Candidates. The Worshipful, The Mayor Cllr Diane Taylor closed the event describing how her own personal  journey had been motivated by serving her community to benefit others.

Lisa Martin Whatley, Costello School  Governor and  Sally- Ann Hall-Jones QMC Governor shared their experiences. They described how their role can help shape a future generation and contribute to getting the best for pupils. The role also provides a link between the school/college and the local community.

Chair of Tadley Town Council, Cllr Jo Page  and Cllr Anne Philips,  Chair Overton Parish Council both addressed the meeting. They spoke about the importance of being a Voice for your community and  playing  an active part in shaping your community.

Maria and the attendees then then questioned a panel of councillors and candidates. Cllr Chloe Ashfield, Cllr Hannah Golding Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council,  and Priya Brown who is standing in the local elections. Questions ranged from why they had first considered standing for office and how much time commitment was required to take up the role.

Maria Miller Commented;

“The event was aimed at encouraging more women to come forward to speak for their community. School Governors, Parish and Borough councillors all play a significant role in representing our community and it is vital that more women consider the opportunities that these roles can offer. The speakers shared their own journeys and encouraged others to make sure more women’s voices are heard in our community. The community is a stronger place when it has good broad representation in these key roles. “
