Maria called in at the Gas Safe Register’s national headquarters, which is based at Chineham Park in Basingstoke, to mark Gas Safety Week 2015, which is running from 14 to 20 September. She was welcomed by Jonathan Samuel, Chief Executive of the Gas Safe Register and Scott Darroch, Head of Communications, who briefed her on their work on gas safety issues.
The Gas Safe Register, which was launched in 2009, replaced CORGI as the official gas registration body for the UK, They work to protect the public from unsafe gas work, by making sure that all gas engineers on the Register are qualified to work with gas and and carrying out regulare inspections of their work. They also focus on raising awarenss of gas safety among consumers.
Maria said: “Gas Safe Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness of gas safety and remind people of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, and from gas leaks, fires and explosions. Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.“
“The best way to protect ourselves and our families from these risks is to have an annual gas safety check, carried out by a registered Gas Safe engineer.”
