Maria Miller MP has called for a change in the law to protect women from Revenge Pornography posted on the internet. Maria says: “The law does not adequately protect women from this new form of sexually abusive behaviour.
“There are between twenty and thirty internet websites accessible in the UK displaying sexually explicit images and recordings of British women that have been posted without their knowledge or permission. The images are posted to abuse and humiliate victims. Distributing online a sexual image or recording without consent should be recognised in law as a serious criminal offence.
“The law needs to keep pace with the digital age and provide women with a legal criminal safeguard against this appalling and sexually abusive behaviour.”
Maria Miller has been working with victims to raise awareness of the issue since it was raised with her by a constituent earlier this year and has gained support for a change in the law from MPs and Members of the House of Lords. She held a debate in the House of Commons on 19 June (Citation: HC Deb, 19 June 2014, c1368) and has also raised it directly with the Lord Chancellor and the Prime Minister on the floor of the House of Commons.
