Maria Miller, MP for Basingstoke, is encouraging young people in Basingstoke to get involved with this summer’s National Citizen Service.
The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a voluntary programme, funded by the Government, that gives 16 year olds across the country the opportunity to take on new challenges, learn new skills and make a difference in their communities. This summer there will be 75 places for young people in Basingstoke to take part in a four week programme of activities.
Maria recently met up with Leah Boon from Hatch Warren, who took part in last year’s pilot of the NCS in Basingstoke.
Leah said: “I really enjoyed the programme last year. I got so much out of it and learned so many skills. It looks brilliant on your CV and really gives you an advantage in applying for college. I would definitely encourage people to take part this year if they can. What’s more, it was really good fun - my best summer holiday ever.”
Maria said: “The National Citizen Service is all about broadening young people’s experience and helping them to prepare for further education and training, and getting into employment.”
Maria added: “As Leah has made clear, the participants will get a great deal out of the programme – and will also have a lot of fun.”
Further details about this year’s programme are available in secondary schools and from Youth Options and Basingstoke Consortium.
